A home theater room shouldn't be set up as you normally would lay out a average den, it requires its own unique agenda if you hope to get that magical experience from each surround sound phenomenon you view and hear on your TV screen. Did you know that there are a handful of straight forward things you can do tonight to make the most of the audio and video of of your TV shows you are watching? The more of these that you can start right now... the bigger the superiority of the sound and picture of your existing system.

Number one: Set your room up as close as possible to the way a movie house is laid out. What do I mean? If you recall, all movie seats point toward the projector screen. There are no caddy corner or angled seats in a movie theater, are there? Have you thought about to reorganize your sofas and recliners to give you a perfect view of the TV?

Number two: Do not put your speakers on the floor! Did you know that the floor and carpeting will silence the quality of sound from your speakers. You would not believe how many people still leave their speakers on the floors! What can you do instead? Use speaker brackets or stick them on a bookshelf. In a perfect environment the speakers should be located just a few feet over your head. Just using this one suggestion will make a large difference.

Number Three: Your goal is to keep your front left and right satellites proportionally arranged on either side of your plasma TV. The center channel speakers should be placed either above or below your plasma. What about the rear speakers? The rear channel speakers should always be placed in the rear of your comfy chairs whether on the walls or in the ceiling. Do you have hard wood floors? Carpeting will add to the quality of your sound as well.

Number 4: Lighting. Think about this, the more light in the room... the more your video quality will be effected. Would you be interested in some ideas to combat this? You must be able to control the interior and the exterior lighting of the room. So first shut off all lights during your movie watching. Some remote controls can even close the lights automatically when the movie begins. Can you imagine that!

What can you do with exterior sunlight? Tyr using room darkening shades or heavy curtains that can be used to be closed over the windows while watching your favorite movie. If you do nothing else remember this... the darker your room the better. Some families even keep a flashlight handy to use for the bathroom breaks!

I told you that you don't have to spend any money to get a better experience from your current surround sound set up.

SPDIF, otherwise known as IEC 958 type II, or Sony/Philips Digital Interconnect Format is an audio and digital format that has been designed to transport digital stereo signals on your computer's audio cards. SPDIF also works on your CD or DVD players, your car's audio or stereo system. This format will work on any other system that uses digital stereo audio.

The two said companies, Sony and Philips, designed this format within or part of the IEC standard. SPDIF is primarily designed for consumer use, which would eventually mean ready to use hardware or equipment that would remain inexpensive. This eventually would mean more equipment or audio systems that are affordable and are portable from one device to another.

The Uses of SPDIF

Since SPDIF also transmits compressed data, one common use for this format is to carry digital audio from one device to another. An example of which would be transporting audio from your DVD player to your TV room's home theater. Your home theater should support either DTS surround sound or Dolby Digital Sound.

This format also uses uncompressed digital data, which allows transporting digital signals to other devices as well. With this audio format, it is possible to transmit digital signals from your CD player to other receivers. It can also be used on a PC that is equipped with its interface. Connectors can either be coaxial cables or optical cables. Any DTS or Dolby capable receivers can make use of such connectors.

The Switch from Professional Format to Commercial Format

We can say that SPDIF owes its beginnings from the field of professional audio along with its said standards and uses. Its predecessor is known as AES/EBU, which used primarily to transmit digital audio among various professional audio devices. SPDIF is almost similar to AES/EBU as far as protocol is concerned.

However, the difference is that the Sony/Philips format uses connectors that are less expensive and are a lot easier for consumers to use. The coaxial or optical cables used in this format are quite common and more readily available.

The Sony MHCEC98Pi Mini Hi-Fi system turned out to be one of the best gadgets that I've bought this year. Yes, I did find it a little bit expensive side, but I still didn't mind spending my hard earned bucks on it at all. Not only does it look good, the quality of its audio playback would impress and surprise even the most jaded Hi-Fi system veteran and audiophiles. Although I found it to be a little bulky in size and design, surprisingly, it turned out to be quite light and easy to handle. The bass effect produced from this machine was very satisfying. The best part was that I did not even have to use the separate sub-woofer to get the heavy bass effect that I usually prefer.

What I also loved about it was that there was hardly any distortion to be detected even when the volume was cranked up.
